About the organization

AFS Interkultur is a partner in the worldwide youth exchange organisation, American Field Service, represented in over 55 countries all over the world. AFS is a voluntary based, non-profit NGO, independent of political and religious interests.

In AFS, we believe that through intercultural understanding and by creating meetings across differences we create solidarity among us. We believe that by getting to know each other’s differences and by becoming aware of our own culture we can create more understanding, more sympathy and less prejudices. All of our activities take their beginning in those thoughts.

For more than 50 years, AFS Interkultur has organised exchanges between almost 50 countries of the world. We have extensive experience in intercultural learning and a network throughout the country to ensure proper support to all participants hosted in Sweden.

AFS’s programmes include:

  • High school stay abroad for young people between 15-18 years (hosting and sending)
  • Programmes for people above the age of 18 spending their gap year taking one or two semesters at a college or university abroad
  • Programmes for people above the age of 18 doing voluntary work in Europe, Africa, Asia, Central America, South America and Australia (hosting and sending)

Activity period

Start date: August 3rd, 2026
End date: 31st July 2027.

Activity description

The volunteer will be supporting AFS Sverige, an organization currently in a period of transition, offering a unique opportunity to actively contribute to the creation and development of a sustainable organization. Working within a small and dynamic office team, the volunteer will have broad exposure to different areas of the organization and play an active role in shaping how AFS Sweden communicates, in whatever way best suits your profile.

A central part of the ESC volunteer’s role will be to support the development of AFS Sweden’s new volunteer engagement structure. As part of our ongoing reorganisation and strategic work, AFS Sweden is in the process of establishing several volunteer working groups within areas such as camps and trainings, media and marketing, administrative support, and local engagement. These groups are intended to create clearer pathways for volunteers to contribute, collaborate and take ownership of different parts of AFS Sweden’s work.

Within this role, the ESC volunteer will work closely with both volunteers and staff, helping to co-create campaigns, support volunteer involvement and ensure that communication activities are anchored in both the office’s strategic priorities and the volunteers’ ideas, energy and local knowledge.

Overall, the role is about contributing actively to a broader development process: engaging volunteers, supporting collaboration, strengthening working groups and helping to build a more connected and co-created volunteer structure within AFS Sweden.

Based on the above, we imagine that your main tasks could include the following:

  • Motivate and engage volunteers to take active roles in AFS Sweden’s working groups.
  • Support volunteer working groups within areas such as camps, media, administration and local engagement.
  • Contribute to the Media Group by supporting campaigns for host families, sending students and volunteer engagement.
  • Connect volunteers and staff through clear communication, coordination and follow-up.
  • Contributing to the creation and development of a long-term sustainable organizational structure and communication strategy
  • Solve tasks related to hosting and sending campaigns
  • Ad hoc administrative tasks, including, for example, application management, as well as contact and coordination with Swedish host families, schools, volunteers and international AFS partners
